MINUTES OF ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING SUNDERLAND GUILD OF HELP HELD ON THURSDAY 6th OF NOVEMBER, 2008 AT THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR Present: The Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Mary Smith and her consort Mr Raymond Smith, Dr & Mrs Peter Gill, Mr & Mrs Alex McConachie, Dr and Mrs N Taylor, Mrs J Dunn, Mr J Stoker, Mr & Mrs J Kelly, Mr and Mrs B Riseborough, Mr Brian Dodds, Mr and Mrs A Taylor and two representatives from Wearside Women in Need. Our speaker this year is Dr Peter Gill who is a consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Sunderland Royal Hospital. Prior to this he trained as a surgeon in Northern Ireland and gained vast experience dealing with the victims of the sectarian violence there.
For a number of years, Dr Gill has been spending his summer holidays voluntarily working at a bush hospital in Northern Zambia, using his professional skills as an orthopaedic surgeon. He has performed a considerable number of operations each day, the electricity being supplied by an unreliable generator. Dr Gill then, raised the funding and support from the UK to build a dam that would supply hydro-electricity to the hospital and the whole community in that remote region of Northern Zambia. He managed to oversee the project to completion. Like the Rev. Wylie Blue, Dr Gill’s commitment as a Christian was the driving force behind this project. Vote of Thanks: Dr Taylor thanked Dr Gill for his inspiring talk and presented him with a token gift. The Mayor of Sunderland Councillor Mary Smith thanked the Guild for the invitation to attend the AGM. She acknowledged recognition for the work the Guild and Dr Gill have done helping the poor and encourage the work to continue. Dr Taylor presented flowers to the Mayor. The Meeting closed at app 8.30 pm.
